Artist Signing ~ Christian Ulbricht

This Saturday, October 30th, Gunther Ulbricht, grandson of the founder of the Christian Ulbricht nutcracker company, will be at Christmas Place for an exclusive signing from 11 AM to 4 PM.

Founded in 1928 by Otto Ulbricht, the company uses native German woods in the creation of their exquisite, hand-crafted nutcrackers and smokers.  The Ulbricht company has provided us with a charming history of the nutcracker:

No one knows where the first nutcracker was born, or even what he looked like. Various accounts place his date of birth in the 17th or 18th century. His was not a celebrated birth, so perhaps he’s been around much longer.

One can imagine him being carved during the long winter nights before Christmas. No doubt he was ready in time for the Christmas feasts, where nuts are as traditional as apples and gingerbread. Many early Nutcrackers are fashioned as kings, generals, and policemen. The carvers were delighted to find a practical use for such stern authority figures.

In the early 1800’s, Nutcrackers were popular in German fairytales. In these stories, Nutcrackers have magical powers for doing good. They come alive when needed and perform miracles for those who believe in them. Tchaikovsky was inspired by one such tale to create “The Nutcracker Suite”, which made Nutcrackers famous the world over.

Today, a Nutcracker’s mere presence is enough to bring good luck to those who believe in him. You must realize that their large teeth and stern countenance are necessary to ward off evil spirits. At heart, Nutcrackers are only interested in your welfare and happiness. At Holiday times especially, the Nutcracker’s calm, upstanding presence assures one and all that nothing bad will happen; and that it will be a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Like Clara in The Nutcracker, kids enjoy playing with nutcrackers, and the Ulbricht collection are truly heirloom quality pieces.  If Christian Ulbricht nutcrackers are already a part of your collection, you may bring in up to two to have signed by Gunther on Saturday.

See you on Saturday!

Lots of Artist Events Coming Up!

We have lots of artists coming to visit Christmas Place in the next few months.  Take a look at our calendar here.

Ne'Qwa Art

R.J. McDonald, a fine art painter from Nashville, Tennessee, will be with us once a month til the end of the year.  Well known for his wildlife art, he also loves painting Santa Claus, and has a collection of beautiful, detailed depictions of holiday scenes.  One favorite includes Santa reviewing the Nice names list, and there’s room for Mr. McDonald to personalize the print with the names of your children and grandchildren.  He’s introducing a new Christmas print this year.

Egyptian Glass

In October, we welcome four artists and an author, starting with our new fan favorite Mario Taré, a delightful designer of Christopher Radko glass ornaments.  Trieste from Ne’Qwa Art, an exquisite painter of ornaments on the inside of the glass, will be here to autograph ornaments.  Linda Paul, the co-creator of Egyptian Museum Glass, will visit the store for a signing.  We welcome R.J. McDonald for a weekend, and finally author Carol Aebersold, author of the most clever children’s book and creator of the “Elf on the Shelf” tradition.

The second weekend in November will be a very busy one for us!  R.J. McDonald will be here all weekend.  On Saturday, Barbara Lund, the Department 56 designer of Dickens Village houses and collectibles will be in the store for a signing.  Also that weekend, we will host our annual Secondary Market Sale in the courtyard ~ collectors of Department 56 will be on hand to sell items from their personal collections.  If this is of interest to you, please contact Teresa Hughes at 864-453-0415, extension 148.

If you’re familiar with the renowned Fontanini nativity collectibles, you’re in for a treat – Stefano Fontanini will be here from Italy for a signing of their handsome and detailed nativity pieces.  We also have a special signing piece for sale that day, a Gloria Angel ornament.

We have a very special treat on Monday, November 15th – the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, Gerald Charles Dickens, will be in the store in the morning to sign autographs, books and Dickens collectibles.  Later that day, he will be giving two performances of his one-man enactment of A Christmas Carol at The Inn at Christmas Place.  Each performance will be followed by a tea and dessert reception catered by The Partridge & Pear Restaurant.  Tickets for the two performances are $24.99 each, and may be purchased by calling either the store at 1-800-445-3396, ask for Guest Services, or the hotel at 1-888-465-9644.  I’ll give more detailed information on the event in a follow-up post.

R. J. McDonald will visit us one more time the weekend before Christmas, so you’ll have another chance to pick up an autographed print as a special gift for someone ~ maybe yourself?!

We’re also hoping to add some choir performances and other special treats as the holidays approach.  Of course, there will be Christmas dinner at the restaurant, and daily activities just for Inn guests throughout December.

Can’t you feel the holidays approaching?  We’re excited, and looking forward to seeing a lot of you in the store soon!

New Year’s Eve Blue Moon

I heard this morning that tonight is a New Year’s Eve Blue Moon night.  The Blue Moon is the second full moon within the same month, and the last Blue Moon occurred in May 2007.  But a New Year’s Eve Blue Moon is an even more rare happening – the last one was 19 years ago, in 1990.  Do we remember back that far into the last century?

If you’re gazing at the moon at midnight, what a spectacular sight it will be!  Unfortunately, here in East Tennessee, we’re expecting overcast skies – but maybe we’ll catch a glimpse of it from somewhere else in the world – are you listening, t.v. camera persons??  We need to see this rare Blue Moon!

Well, Santa has come and gone for this year, and as we say goodbye to 2009, we here at The Christmas Place ~ the owners, Santa, and all the elves ~ say a big Thank You! to everyone who has visited us in the past year, whether in the store on the Parkway, through our Internet store, on Facebook, or in any other way our paths have crossed.  It has been our very great pleasure to serve you this year.

We’re very excited to see what 2010 holds for us ~ new friends to meet, old friends to greet, and the continued celebration of the spirit of Christmas ~ “it is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air!”

We’re also excited to welcome you to our newest venture, our restaurant, The Partridge & Pear at Christmas Place, opening in early summer of 2010.  We’ll continue to keep you updated on our building progress (we have a full roof and the windows are going in this week), and tempt you with menu updates and photos of the new place.

Until we meet again, we wish you a very Happy New Year!
