Riddle me this: why, when I searched for “cat” on our shopping site, was the first item up a purple feather?? I guess that would be classified as a cat accessory, maybe?

P.S. I would like to reassure everyone that I do understand why the feather came up in the search for “cat.” More proof that the human brain does not think in 1 and 0 like the electronic brain! For our new shopping site (currently under construction) we’ve been refining search engine properties so that actual cats will show up first in a search list for the same. I just happened to find it particularly amusing that an item that would so well entertain a cat appeared in my earlier search….had a fishing rod also appeared, it would have pushed me over the top!
I checked out your site, and when L typed in cat also it did pop-up. BUT it is because the word CAT is in the word deliCATe, it seems to search by keywords in descriptions, but not the actual word cat. and this item is def not a cat toy, it seems to be a floral item.
It’d be like typing in the word “lick” and fLICKer bulbs pop up first, but you would def. not lick them now would you? =P
So I would say this is a keyword search, which has it’s pro’s and con’s. The con being that which you stated and the pro being if you misspell a word it can still find it.
Thanks, Jay! I was mostly laughing at the idea that the glittering purple feather could be a cat toy. I’ve been told that our next site will have a more sophisticated search engine that will handle these kinds of issues.
